5 Second Review: Wall-E

New Pixar movie proves to be studio's most ambitious project to date. Story of an abandoned earth and the last of a crew of clean-up robots mapping out his solitary existence in fire extinguishers and old musicals.
Pros:
- Absolutely gorgeous animation. Almost unparalleled in its gorgeousness.
- Very interesting story and (for Disney/Pixar) rather bleak to boot.
- Impossibly manages to capture all the emotions there are, in a character who has no facial features other than eyes.
- Manages to engage despite being 90% dialogue free.
- Has more Heart than a Nanci Wilson fans record collection.
- Absolutely demented in its views of humanity. Criticising mankinds leanings towards couch potatoness from a studio who encourages people to be couch potato's is frankly unheard of.
- Beepy noises and dialogue free movies are not to everybody's taste.
- Neither are Pixar movies. These haters are known as assholes.

Flying Lotus

I guess this could be considered a music i cant get out of my head post , but really i just wanted to talk about Flying Lotus, that said some of his tunes have been stuck in my head for a while now.
Flying Lotus (né Steven Ellison) is a hip-hop music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California.Nephew to American jazz artist, Alice Coltrane, Ellison comes from a pretty impressive background and throughout his work it is possible to hear both his hiphop influences and the jazz styles along with other genres including Brazilian and electronica. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere.
His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006.
He signed to Warp Records in 2007,and released the six-track Reset EP in the same year. And last month released his follow-up album titled Los Angeles.
talking about his new album he had this to say
"Los Angeles is a special place to me for obvious reasons, but for the majority of my life, I hated living here,I only realized that by leaving and being able to check out new places, new vibes, and to chill with different folks. With my projects, I try to have a visual narrative happening. I like the idea of my albums being movies"
The album its self has moments of of absolute brilliance spread across this long awaited 17 track album, and its those tracks that refuse to settle comfortably into any recognizable genre. As a whole the album is pretty much seamless and it seems like he has spent a lot of time on the tracks giving a richness to the sound is seems like not one note or beep or crackly is out of place.
Had a bit of trouble picking a track to play off the album but i decided on two track off the album , the last two track as well (lot more i wanted to post like gng bng and Roberta Flack feat.dolly) the first features Gonja Sufi and the second features Daedelus' longtime collaborator and wife Laura Darlington. The tracks are somewhere along the lines of trip-hop or downtempo, similar to Portishead, but more ambient and soulful.

Electric Picnic & IMRO Kiss and Make Up

The dispute between IMRO & POD concerts over royalties has been resolved, ensuring this year's Electric Picnic will definitely be going ahead. Woo hoo!
Here's the statement released this morning by POD:
"A settlement has been reached between IMRO and POD Concerts relative to the dispute on royalties in respect of multistage events including the Electric Picnic. The proceedings are to be adjourned to allow IMRO to conduct a review of its concerts tariff and, if necessary, to allow the tariff to be ruled on by an arbitrator. Electric Picnic 2008 will be proceeding."

Point Depot becomes 'The O2'

Oh lord, has corporate sponsorship gone too far? In place of the country's largest (and crappest) indoor venue, we shall soon have the country's largest (and most shameless) advertisement. Behold the nightmare that is The O2.
"It’s what Irish music lovers have been waiting for".- theo2.ie
No, it's what O2 have been waiting for, a marketing coup of epic proportions. Consider Vodafone officially put to shame. Bigger than the Point, and sonically better (in fairness, The Point was a giant shed), the O2 will be a monstrosity finely designed to pack in the punters and wrangle every penny possible out of Ireland's 'Music Fans'. There's already a series of money-making schemes being advertised online- The VIP Club: an opportunity not only to gorge yourself at a 'luxurious private bar' during the show, but also to avoid the plebeians by entering the arena through your own private entrance; and The Premium Club, which promises MORE EXCLUSIVE seating, and a no-such-thing-as-sold-out policy.
The humdinger though that apparently o2 customers (yes, us regular phone users) get access to tickets for gigs two days before they go on sale. Good news for o2 customers- bad news for, well, music fans. O2 are being fairly shameless about this and holding gigs in The Point for ransom- if you want to catch an act in this venue, you'd better switch to o2.
Check out this corporate arseholery from their site:
"No wonder music lovers can’t wait. Even better, we’re more excited to tell O2 customers, that you and your friends will enjoy some nice extras. Imagine, you’ll have access to your own bar and facilities, as well as priority tickets to plenty of gigs."
"Register today to be eligible for priority tickets and some more of those little extras. Exclusive to O2 customers, of course."
Agh! The corporations are taking over! Oh wait, they already have...
More photos of what awaits in the read more.

For more nausea, head over to the official site and take the 'Virtual Tour'. On second thoughts, don't, just start working on relinquishing your fandom of any act big enough to be playing in this abomination.

Sugarlips Spotlight: ARCADA

Arcada are an awesome four-piece from Dublin, who's blend of energy and experimentation have won them quite a few fans on the gig circuit. Influenced by a huge variety of musical styles & genres, Arcada have rolled them all up into a quirky yet kinetic package. The band have recently played well received shows with the likes of Tubelord, Blakfish, BATS & Heathers, and seem to be on the verge of taking Dublin by storm.
The tipping point may well be reached this August, as Arcada release their debut album. For now the only aural taste of the band available is from their 2007 EP, but it should be more than enough to get you excited about August. This is I Will If You Ask Me:
Arcada- I Will If You Ask Me
Click for mp3
If August seems too far away (it is, you know), you can check out Arcada live this Saturday night at Sugarlips in the Lower Deck, Portabello. Tickets are 5 euro til 9, 6 thereafter. Also playing are The Avalanche Effect, and the amazing Elk, which we'll be profiling tomorrow.
Check out Arcada on myspace here.

Glastonbury Diary

So I'm sure you've all heard about Amy Winehouse and her fan punching and Jay-Z and his Noel Gallagher punching (not literally) in fact you may have even seen more bands than I did on BBC but nothing compares to the experience of being there. I guarantee you that no matter what festivals you have been to in the world you have never seen anything to equal the size of the daddy of them all.
Click on the read more for Glasto Diary and Gig review
Wed 25th June
Arrive. Queue for 45 mins for tickets. Pitch tents & gazebo. Take comfort in the fact that there are no major bands on today and that we have to go nowhere and do nothing. Do anyway. Get drunk. Rest blur.
Thurs 26th June
Whole day of wandering around looking at shit and getting drunk. Watch a couple of godawful bands who's names were unavailable in the Leftfield stage. Rest blur.
Fri 27th JuneFirst day of proper schedule music. Wander down in morning to get some food. Stop by the John Peel Stage to see somebody called Royworld. Stay for a song or two. Boring Coldplay like tunes provoke severe dose of wandering the fuck away from there. Check out vid below for yourself
Apres Royworld head back for post breakfast beer. Look at timetable. Nobody on for a while but Glasvegas are playing close enough to wander down. Go down. One song I know/like turns out to be the only song I know/like. Oh well.
Glasvegas- Geraldine
Click for mp3Off to Jazzworld which coincidentally is right beside the Brothers Pear Cider stand. Nothing jazzy on, so Cider it is. 3 pints time its time for Ben Folds. Not my favourite artist but my ignorance of the chap has been mocked long enough so lets check him out. By all accounts a decent Folds peformance. Weather isn't magnificent while he's playing but he keeps the crowd in a good mood and finishes with a pretty amusing cover of Dr.Dre's "Bitches ain't shit".
Ben Folds- Bitches Aint Shit
Click for mp3The hype machine has roled all over The Ting Ting's and so its time to see if they're worth the paper they're printed on. Head to John Peel Stage to find it more packed then apparently its ever been. Hardly surprising considering the afore-mentioned hype. Turns out they can actually play live. Considering its only two people on synthed up drums guitars and vocals then its quite surprising they fill the tent with sound in the way they do. In fact they do it so impressively that the only song that sounds quite lacklustre is the on that a lot of people turned up to see.
The Ting Tings- Great DJ
Click for mp3Large blank gap for four hours between The Ting Ting's and final act of the day in which many bands I could have seen played. No idea if I did see them but next memory is turning up at Kings of Leon on the main stage. Perhaps everybody has a Kings of Leon phase. For some reason I have their first album and a copy of their second so I must have gone through one at one point but damned if I can figure out why. Prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt but after a hella long wait for them to come on stage and a boring as fuck first song that I don't know, followed by a boring as fuck second song that I do know I decide to bail to see if I can catch some of Sinead O'Connor or Seasick Steve. Fighting through the crowd at the Pyramid stage makes me miss both. Bummer. Rest of night = blur.
Seasick Steve- Dog House Boogie
Click for mp3
Sat 28th JuneDrank late so rose late. Quelle Surprise. Quick joint to falafel stand drags me by John Peel again where a quirky little chick called Emmy the Great is waking folk up. Compares her album coming out to Chinese Democracy. "Thats not a Political joke its a Guns N'Roses joke". Remind myself to check out more of this little lady's stuff.
Unfortunately Emmy the great is not enough to wake me from a rotten hangover + rotten sunstroke. Decide to lie down for several hours so I don't miss the evenings festivities. Several hours later sleeping and an hour and a half in the cinema tent watching The Simpsons Movie (better on a second watch) and off to the Park area via the Pyramid stage checking out a bit of Manu Chao on the way who appears to be making the crowd dance like bastards.
Manu Chao- Merry Blues
Click for mp3Arriving in the Park area just in time to see the second of half of Fight Like Apes who if you don't know are a fantastic shouty little Irish band and are here proving their ever growing awesomeness with a short but sweet set where they woo a small (and mostly Irish) but still significant crowd. Plus its recorded for the BBC and should be on the website but isn't at this time of writing for some reason. Not too good considering its supposed to be fucking promoting new bands.
Fight Like Apes finishes approximately ten minutes before MGMT are due to begin on the main Park stage. As we arrive however we hear The Last Shadow Puppets being introduced for their secret gig. This doesn't bode well especially seeing as I'm not buying into any of Alex Turner's bullshit or his side projects and naturally enough this little performance fails to impress me regardless of whether Jack White was in the audience or not.The boding proved correct as well unfortunately as the sets thereafter ran 40 minutes later and despite the fact that it was Saturday night the curfew remained in effect. MGMT played a 5 song set ending with Electric Feel, Time to Pretend and then doing their karaoke rendition of Kids which consistently makes me like them less and less.
MGMT- Electric Feel
Click for mp3
Battles however I like more and more each time I see them and having them reduced to 4 songs makes me want to hit things especially when they were kicking as much ass as they were as they race through Tij, Tonto, Atlas and Leyendecker. Hopefully next time they play in my presence I'll see the whole set.
Battles- Leyendecker
Click for mp3CSS, as somebody pointed out to me, you can see every other weekend at home but as I mentioned they were running 40 minutes late so by the time they started there was no running down to catch a bit of Jay-Z (unfortunately for me from what I hear). Still there's no denying that the Brazilians put on a good show and tonight is no exception. Its just a shame that they can't pull a full set out of the crowd for all the folks who really want them.
Saturday night ends. On to oblivion. Drink through the night until about 8 in the morning find ourselves in the grounds of the farm trying to see if we can see the Eavis's. Unsurprisingly we don't.
CSS- Let's Make Love (Calvin Harris Remix)
Click for mp3
Sunday 29th JuneThere are those who might call me little bitch but its become a tradition at this stage that the Sunday of any given festival will see me being as sick as a fucking dog and this particular festival is no exception. Such is this fucker of a rotten tummy that I only emerge out in time to see...Neil fucking Diamond.
Now I am one of those people who can say in all seriousness and without even a hint of irony that I have been to a Neil Diamond concert. Such is the state of my (and at least half our group) that we choose to punctuate the break in songs with exclamations like "Neil Diamond!!!" or "We're at a Neil Diamond concert". The crowd like him well enough however and if there was a prize for getting a crowd of people to sing along to "Sweet Caroline" then Mr Diamond would surely take it. As you can see from the picture below my body did not agree with the crowds sentiments.
Neil Diamond- Sweet Caroline
Click for mp3
While some went to The Verve and some went to Manu Chao doing his second gig of the weekend I and my wretched stomach went and watched the first screening of Wall-E. Good movie, still the sounds of the Verve kind of made me want to head down there and hear Bittersweet Symphony and what not. Next year I'll have to grow another set of balls.

Life Advice From Canadian Musicians

They're world leaders in esoteric indie pop-rock, so surely those Canucks have a thing or two to say about dealing with life's problems. The Believer magazine reckons so, and has roped in some of em to act as agony aunts for this month's issue. Contributions from Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett and Tegan & Sara below...
Dear Sedaratives,
Are babies worth the hassle of pregnancy?
An Unwilling Mother,
Jacksonville, Fla.
Dear Unwilling Mother,
This is an excellent question. I don’t have any children, nor am I a woman, so I went to an expert: my mother. She said, “No. The nine months of pregnancy are just the beginning. Once the baby is born, you will lose your identity. Your baby’s birth will also be your death. Not literally, of course, but the death of the vibrant, exciting woman that you’ve spent your whole life working on. You will lose contact with friends. Your writing will suffer. And the so-called ‘bliss of parenthood’ is a sham too. You’ll find yourself talking less about your beautiful new infant and more about the weight you’ve gained.”
Thanks, Mom! I love you too.

Dear Sedaratives,
My little brother said we should smoke some weed together, but I don’t want him taking pictures and blackmailing me with them. Should I address this to him directly or is there a way I can get around it without bringing it up at all?
Warmly,
Dale Shipley
Naples, Fla.
Dear Dale,
It’s a trap. My older sister publicly resolved to discontinue her addiction to nicotine at midnight on January 1, 2007. She declared her abstinence from the habit and promised, in a binding agreement with a friend, to pay one thousand dollars to anyone who caught her inhaling. At 3:23 a.m. on January 1st, 2007, my sister arrived home from the bar, under the influence of alcohol, and disturbed my slumber by blasting songs from her electro-pop side project while dancing around the inflatable mattress I was sleeping on in her living room. She then proceeded to smoke her face off while mocking my good behavior. I quickly turned on my video camera and captured her in the act. I then used the incriminating tape to receive my thousand-dollar reward. I also called her “watpagin” for three months following a predictive text mishap from the same evening. Don’t ever trust a sibling not to sell you out for laughs or money.
Cheers,
Sara Quin, Tegan and Sara

What a sick sad world we live in

The gravestone of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has been stolen from a Cheshire cemetery.
Cheshire Police said his memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery.
The police think that the gravestone (pictured above) was taken sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. the police have also said
"There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft.
"This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."
I must say this is a very sad turn of affairs and i really hope that it will turn up.
Here's José Gonzales with a quiet-y take on Curtis' epitaph:

Genghis Tron remix series

Genghis Tron is set to release very special, five-volume Board Up The House remix series. Each record will feature a select number of Genghis Tron songs taken from Board Up The House, remixed by a variety of artists. Some of the participating artists include BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW, ULVER, DNTEL, TELEFON TEL AVIV, STEVE MOORE, JESU/JUSTIN BROADRICK, DANNY LOHNER, ROB CROW, SUBTLE, ODD NOSDAM, CIRCLE, TIM HECKER, and many more to be announced soon.
(more in the read more)
Genghis Tron commented on the series: "We are very excited to announce a series of special GT releases which we've been scheming for quite some time now. Those who have been following us for a while know that we've always been interested in remixes, but to date we've only released a few GT remixes on a few tour-only CDs. We've wanted to do something grander and more "official" for a long time, so we're proud to say that we've finally assembled a very massive, very official remix project. We reached out to lots of musicians who we admire and overall we've been completely overwhelmed at their willingness to participate in this massive, awesome project. More importantly, the remixes are sounding pretty mind-blowing so far...we're excited to share them with you."
